Hand tool  essentials

This hands-on course is designed for beginners in woodworking or individuals who want to refresh their fundamental skills and develop a strong foundation in using hand tools effectively. It serves as the initial class in the three-part Fundamentals series and is a prerequisite for Fundamentals II.

The course begins with an introduction to wood technology, hand tool usage, design principles, and the creation of essential joinery. Throughout the course, you will learn the following:

  • Workshop safety 
  • Basics of wood properties and understanding wood movement
  • Proper use and maintenance of fundamental hand tools, such as planes and chisels
  • Techniques for sharpening edge tools
  • Measuring and marking out materials
  • Introduction to basic joinery methods, including:
  • through-dovetails, half-blind dovetails
  • half-lap joints, and
  • mortise and tenon joints.

Tuition:               $732

The course consists of evening classes held over a period of four weeks, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday. In total, you will receive 33 hours of instruction, with additional shop time available as needed to work on exercises.

  Note: we may add a “bonus day” (at no additional cost) on Thursday November 14th please be prepared to attend.

 The school will provide the necessary tool kit.

Safety

Eye, hearing and dust protection are required in the machine room or when operating machines in the bench room.

Long sleeves and loose-fitting clothing are not allowed around the power equipment. Long hair must be pulled back and secured.

Closed-toe shoes are required. Open-toed shoes or sandals are not allowed.

COVID Policy: Masks are optional, however, if you are exhibiting symptoms of any contagious illness or if you have had a positive test for COVID or influenza within the past 5 days, please notify the school and do not attend class.

Meet your Instructor

David Fleming learned basic carpentry as a matter of necessity while living for many years remote northwest Alaska for many years. In the 1980’s, he discovered the work of woodworking icon James Krenov, and spent two years studying with Krenov at the renowned Fine Woodworking program at California’s College of the Redwoods. David relocated to Scottsdale, AZ in 1993 and has made furniture there ever since. An expert in hand tool use, he has taught Krenov-inspired woodworking techniques to small classes and groups since 2009. Visit www.dfcabinetmaker.com
