Whether for keeping or giving, an elegant turned box is a beautiful and useful creation.
In this workshop, master turner Matt Monaco will teach you how to create, design, and turn perfectly proportioned keepsake boxes utilizing side grain. Turning with the grain of the wood sideways creates a beautiful effect, especially on the lid of such a container, and allows you to “paint” with the wood itself. However it also comes with special challenges that may not be obvious to new turners.
By selecting the wood carefully and using careful tool control techniques, you will produce a successful and satisfying final project.
Under Matt’s guidance, each student will accent their containers with fine-turned detail that express their individual style. Along the way, you will discover the many design opportunities that exist in the making process, as well as the importance of sharpening, cutting clean, and how to do both effectively and efficiently for a more enjoyable turning experience.
You will learn to:
- Develop solid fundamental cutting techniques based on the principles of grain orientation
- Develop confidence & skill in sharpening lathe tools
- Create turned vessels with perfectly fitted lids
- Recognize design opportunities and develop your eye for fine form
- Turn fine detail & cut clean with a variety of turning tools
