SSP101D21 Turn a Square Serving Platter with Doug Forsha

April, 3 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM

No Skills necessary

Turned Square Platter
Here’s a fun turning project that results in a beautiful and almost magical-looking finished piece: a square turned platter.
The platter will be made of Walnut with Maple banding, and the magic happens in two parts, with lots of opportunities to learn new skills along the way. First, you will learn to turn a round platter with perfectly parallel sides of even thickness, by using a custom-made jig designed by instructor Doug Forsha. You will also learn how to use a dovetail chuck to create the foot of the platter. Then, you will cut the platter square and sand it to perfection, heightening the illusion.
Even if you have never used a lathe before, Doug will walk you through every step of the process, making it safe and fun. You will learn competence with a variety of lathe techniques, and will make a beautiful and functional platter along the way.
You will learn:
· Safe and effective use of the lathe
· How to turn a round platter
· How to turn parallel surfaces with a jig (duplicator)
· How to create a dovetail pocket
· How to use the dovetail chuck
· How to cut a round platter to a perfect square
· Sanding for a smooth finish
