This class will be exploring techniques used for parquetry with decorative veneering. A hands-on seminar with burls and various other wood veneers, creating book matches, starbursts, border work, and edging details. We will practice traditional, contemporary and production parquetry, tessellating techniques, with pixilated designs or some pictorial marquetry if there is interest. We will be using various glue-up systems with vacuum and cauls that could be used in smaller furniture shops. This class will cover the theory of proper substrates, making flat or curved panels, and incorporating veneer into your furniture designs. The goal for each student is to construct and complete at least two small jewelry box lid panels during this seminar. The evening slide show on the second day (Sunday, Mar. 1) will cover techniques used in furniture design and inlay of wood veneer, shell, metal, and stone. The last day of this six-day class will focus on building a class collaboratively designed and constructed tabletop surface that will be auctioned off to support the SSW school maintenance program, done on the last day after we clean up* Bring your pencils, rulers , saw and veneering chisel to do some chess boards, Louis cubes, and beyond!
