Prerequisite: Fundamentals I

The second class in our Fundamentals series, this course builds on and reinforces the skills taught in Fundamentals I. We will stress the safe use of power tools such as the jointer, planer, bandsaw, miter saw, and table saw. Sharpening and marking out skills will be reinforced. Students will practice several types of joints and will apply their skills through exercises and the building a small dovetailed bench (see photo). Edge jointing, shaping with spoke shaves, and surface preparation for finishing are also covered. Skills taught:

  • Hand-cut dovetails, through and half-blind
  • Hand-cut mortise and tenon
  • sharpening
  • power tool safety
  • surface preparation
  • working to a drawing
  • marking out
  • gluing

Schedule: Evening classes, 6:00pm – 9:00pm, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, 36 hrs of instruction total. There will be additional shop time available as needed to work on the exercises.
