TMW101H23 Tool Making Workshop

August, 19 - August, 20 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

$376.00

One of the joys becoming a craftsperson is making your own tools. Not only is it fun, but by building your own woodworking tools, you have a chance to customize them to your own preferences and style.

Master craftsman Randy Gengarelly will lead this busy and productive workshop, in which each student will build four attractive and high-quality woodworking tools that will give you years of satisfying use.

This is a beginner-friendly class that offers a fun opportunity to learn joinery and building techniques that will empower you to make more tools on your own as you continue to develop your woodworking practice. Randy will guide you through each project and will show you a number of options for shaping the tools to best suit your particular needs.

You will make:

  • Cutting (marking) gauge
  • Pencil marking gauge
  • Mallet
  • Try square

If time permits, we will also add a bonus project of a fairing board, which is a very helpful tool to make for yourself.

Prerequisite:
 Fundamentals I or Equivalent.
Tools and materials: All tools and materials are provided; however tools are a great way to use up small pieces of wood, so if you have any favorite woods that you’d like to use, feel free to bring them.

Meet your Instructor

Furniture maker Randy Gengarelly specializes in making luxury pieces that are reminiscent of the finest work done in previous centuries, with meticulous attention to aesthetics, craftsmanship, and function. His work has been featured in Fine Woodworking magazine and the Orbita® watch-winder catalogue. Randy studied under the great Italian-born cabinet-maker Egidio “Gene” Oliverio, who began his apprenticeship at the age of seven and who had never seen a power tool until moving to the United States in the mid 1930’s. In that tradition, Randy does most of his work with hand tools, which he feels are key to acheiving the fine lines, subtle shaping, and precise fit of truly fine furniture. Randy also  spends part of his time teaching leadership and communication skills around the U.S. and world. This role has allowed him to closely study the furniture in many of the world’s best museum collections and his admiration for these masterpieces influences each piece that he designs and builds.
