TDF101I23 Tear Drop Finials with Matt

September, 1 - September, 3 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

$578.00

Fancy and fun, finial jars present a wonderful opportunity to stretch your turning skills.

From selecting the wood, to designing the shapes, controlling the proportions, and cutting a tight-fitting lid, you’ll have professional turner Matt Monaco at your side as you learn all the secrets to turning beautiful jars finished with classic tear-drop finials.

By practicing effective tool control under Matt’s guidance, you will refine your technique and will discover how body mechanics and correct use of the basic range of turning tools can produce exceptional results. Matt will also show you how simple tool modifications can greatly improve the overall cleanliness of surfaces and the refinement of the finished form.

In this empowering class, you will make multiple jars that allow you to practice the many skills necessary for successful turning, and will leave with functional and attractive vessels just right for gifting — or keeping.

You’ll learn to:

– Understand principles of wood selection and end grain orientation

– Develop a solid cutting technique with the full range of turning tools

– Develop confidence and skill in sharpening and shaping tools, as well as basic modifications for better results

– Develop finesse at the lathe and apply fine tool control

– Execute the most effective ways of hollowing end grain

Meet your Instructor

Professional woodturner Matt Monaco produces beautifully crafted bowls, plates, and platters from his studio in the Ozark region of Missouri. Combining thoughtful design and precise technique, Matt uses a standard lathe and turning tools to produce wood pieces that echo the precision and elegance of traditional pottery, creating a unique style that he rightfully describes as “wood-carved pottery.”

As the founder and owner of Monaco Bowls, Matt designs and creates turned products for homeowners, gallery buyers, museum stores, and interior designers. In addition to 19 years of turning experience he produces his own work, and demonstrates for national wood turning clubs of the AAW, and teaches at woodworking schools across the country.
