STR201B24 Stereotomy: Building the Moore Trestle

February 3 @ 9:00 am - February 4 @ 5:00 pm

$399.00

From historical construction to contemporary woodworking, Stereotomy is a time-tested system to visualize and execute complex works.

In France, the journeyman tradition of carpentry includes the study of Stereotomy and a young carpenter arriving in each new shop would typically build a pair of trestle sawhorses, with the complexity of the objects serving as a showcase for the carpenter’s mastery of the art.

Canadian woodworker Patrick Moore has studied extensively in France and other parts of Europe and has dedicated himself to introducing and reviving the knowledge of Stereotomy here in North America.

Patrick is returning to the Southwest School of Woodworking, to share his understanding of these classical techniques as he guides students through building the Moore Trestle, which exemplifies that tradition.

In this fascinating class, you will learn the history — and science — behind the art as you build your own stunning French-style trestle, perfect for use as an eye-catching stool or side table.

You will learn:

  • Stereotomy Definition and Concepts
  • Historical Applications of Stereotomy
  • Contemporary Relevance of Stereotomy
  • Insights into the Traditional Training of European Journeyman Carpenters
  • Fundamentals of Drafting in Stereotomy
  • Crafting Stereotomical Drawings: Plan, Elevation, and Net Views
  • Utilizing Drawings for Trestle Layout
  • Mastery of Compound Angle Cutting using Hand and Power Tools
  • Execution of South American Moore Trestle: Layout, Cutting, and Assembly
