SPNDL101L23 Beginning Spindle Turning with Matt

December, 3 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

A building block of both wood-turning and furniture-making, the spindle is essentially a rod. But that simple concept can become an elegant candlestick, a shapely baluster, a lamp, a chair rail, and so much more.

Learning to design and turn spindles will open up a whole world of
possibilities, whether for stand-alone turning projects, or as components of a larger piece of furniture or other woodworking projects.

In this one-day class, master turner Matt Monaco will guide you through the basics of spindle turning. You’ll learn the safe and efficient use of the lathe and practice key shaping techniques, including turning both beads and coves.

In just one day, you will design and create your own beautiful spindle that you can take home as an elegant decorative item, or turn into a functional candle holder.

You will learn:

  • Proper use and application of the lathe and tools
  • How to turn a spindle between centers
  • Shaping beads and coves
  • Designing a spindle
  • How to shape a spindle into a candle holder (optional)
  • Surface preparation
  • Finishing a turned surface

In addition to 19 years of turning experience he produces his own work, and demonstrates for national wood turning clubs of the AAW, and teaches at woodworking schools across the country.
