SKU301C21 SketchUp Advanced

March, 5 from 11:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Many professional woodworkers have turned to computer-aided design (CAD) software to produce high-quality 3D drawings before ever beginning a project. But even a hobbyist can use these programs to draw out ideas and consider scale, proportion, and construction details before beginning a project. CAD models allow you to think through new techniques or ideas; mock-up colors, textures, or other details; and even use those models to produce construction drawings to save time and money when it’s time to start cutting.

One of the most user-friendly and powerful such programs is SketchUp, which is available in a popular free version or an even more robust paid version, which we recommend.

This intermediate class will build on the principles taught in our SketchUp Basics course, including more advanced techniques and a more thorough understanding of the key ideas, so you will be able to use this program to more easily create sophisticated drawings of your own projects.

You will learn:

  • The difference between Components and Groups—and how to use them effectively
  • How to use Solid tools to remove, cut, and merge objects
  • How to use Shadows tool apply convincing shadows
  • How to use section planes to expose interior details in your models
  • How to use Assorted Styles to change the look and background of your models
  • How to apply textures to your models using imported images
  • How to accurately scale and mirror your models
  • How to use 3D Warehouse to upload your models and locate other models
  • How to use Parallel Projection to turn your 3D model into 2D work drawings for manufacturing
  • How to create an animated video of your model and export it or use it as a display
