Sharp cutting tools are essential to precision woodworking, and yet very few woodworkers know how to sharpen their own handsaws. Instead, they have to mail them to a specialist, pay $50 to $100+ per saw, wait for weeks, and hope the result is what they wanted.
Don’t let that be you! If you learn to sharpen your own saws, you’ll be able to save time and money, and take control of the end result.
Master Craftsman Randy Gengarelly keeps his own tools in top shape and he will teach you how to do the same for yours.
This two-day course is held over two consecutive Saturdays. The week between classes will give you time to practice before the second session, when we’ll discuss and diagnose any problems you might encounter along the way.
We encourage you to bring your own saws but we will have additional saws available for practice. Please note that we will be working only with Western-style saws in this workshop, not Japanese-style saws.
Schedule: Saturday, Oct 18 and Saturday, Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days.
You will learn:
- The anatomy of sawtooth design and its effect on the saw’s function
- How to make a saw sharpening vise (You will make one in class.)
- How to make jigs to use with your saw files
- How to sharpen both basic types of teeth – rip and crosscut
- How to “set” teeth to keep your saw from binding in the cut
- How to “stone” teeth to ensure a straight cut along the cut line
- How to remove rust
- How to remove and recut misshapen or broken teeth
- How to retention (i.e., straighten) a bent saw plate – on both backsaws and panel saws
- How to repair a damaged saw handle.

Prerequisite: None. Open to all skill levels.
Tools required: You are encouraged to bring your own western-style hand saws, however the school will also supply saws for practice. You will also need saw files and handles. We will send information about what you will need and where to get it once you have registered.
