DESCRIPTION:A turned plate or platter is a beautiful and functional piece as well as a fun woodworking project. In addition to being useful for serving food or organizing household objects\, a platter or plate could also be a stunning piece for display. In this three-day workshop\, professional turner Matt Monaco will teach you how to use careful shaping and fine details to create a unique work of art. Our emphasis will be on gaining a solid understanding of fine turning technique\, with tool control and finesse; learning the nuances of sharpening & tool modifications; developing muscle memory as well as developing confidence and skill with turning with traditional tools of the craft.  Matt is an expert on the usage of proper body mechanics and finesse to control the cutting tools and will guide you through a series of demonstrations and hands-on exercises to develop your skills. Each student will complete at least one large platter\, which will be finished with food safe oils & waxes\, making it equally suited as an item for display or for serving food. You will learn to: Develop solid fundamental cutting techniques based on understanding principles of grain orientationDevelop confidence & skill in sharpening lathe toolsProper use of bowl gouges and shear scrapersCreate turned platters with fine detailRecognize design opportunities and develop your eye for fine formYour instructor:  Matt Monaco\, owner of Monaco Bowls\, designs and creates turned products for homeowners\, gallery buyers\, museum stores\, and interior designers. In addition to producing his own work\, Matt is a wonderful teacher who demonstrates for national wood turning clubs and leads classes at woodworking schools across the country\, including the Southwest School of Woodworking.
