Marquetry with David Fleming

July 11 @ 9:00 am - July 12 @ 5:00 pm

$360

Marquetry is truly both an art and a craft, using veneers to create absolutely any design that you can imagine, which can turn even functional woodworking pieces into beautiful decor. This two-day class explores the widely-practiced double-bevel marquetry, using 1.5mm sawn veneers and hand tools. In this elegant technique, the picture is drawn on the background veneer, the “inlay” piece is taped underneath, and both are sawn together on an angle, creating a precise wedge fit when the pieces are assembled.

We will first learn the basic techniques of laying out and accurately sawing a simple leaf-and-twig picture using contrasting veneers. Then we will make a somewhat more complex picture and will add the hot sand shading technique that lends depth and dimension to the finished picture.

You will learn:

  • basics of marquetry
  • principles of marquetry design
  • how to select veneers
  • how to apply designs to veneer
  • how to cut, assemble, and glue marquetry pieces
  • hot sand shading
  • how to prepare marquetry for finishing

Recommended reading is The Art Of Marquetry, by Craig Vandall Stevens, or his more recent The Fine Art Of Marquetry, for both inspiration and a clear explanation of the double-bevel process.

All you’ll need to get started at home is the kitchen table, some masking tape, and inspiration!
