MAQ101F24 Portrait Marquetry with Jeff Grossman

June, 7 - June, 9 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

$568.00

Get ready to bring a whole new level of artistry to your woodworking with this three-day Introduction to Portrait Marquetry class.

While the finished portraits may look impossibly complex, YOU CAN DO IT! Learn to create these beautiful effects with basic woodworking skills — no art degree required.

Marquetry is the art and craft of creating pictures and decorative designs by the skillful use of the grain, figure and color of thin veneers of wood.  And one of the most exciting uses of marquetry is making actual portraits, which can be incorporated into a larger piece of woodworking or used as a standalone artwork.

In this amazing class, instructor Jeff Grossman will show you how to create marquetry portraits yourself.

Jeff will work with each student to help select an appropriate photograph, then we will use common photo software to convert the image into a simple line drawing that defines shades of light and dark patterns, which will become your template.

Jeff will then guide you through using the “Window” method of marquetry to cut wood veneers to match the template pieces, and assembling them into an original portrait.

You will learn how to select veneers with distinctive grains and colors, to define facial tones and features, how to use sand shading to add depth and shadow, and how to prepare your assembled piece for finishing.

The final result will amaze you, and start you on a whole new journey of woodworking and art.

You will learn:

  • How to choose an image for a marquetry portrait
  • How to use common software (Photoshop and Inkscape) to convert a picture into a line drawing
  • How to select and prepare veneer colors to suit your image
  • Cutting techniques using the “Window” method with a scalpel and/or scroll saw
  • Techniques for cutting fine lines and facial features
  • How to achieve tight joints of veneer pieces
  • How to use wood grain to create shadows
  • How to add depth and shadows with sand shading
  • How to assemble and glue marquetry pieces
  • How to add a border
  • How to add an inlaid signature
  • How to prepare marquetry for finishing and apply finish
  • How to use a marquetry cutting table

Each student will submit proposed photos in advance so that Instructor Jeff Grossman can help select the most suitable images.
