Make Your Own Flute

For a really fun and unusual project, we offer our great Make Your Own Flute weekend workshop. The flute is one of the oldest-known musical instruments, with ancient examples found in cultures from around the world and made from materials including bone, mammoth tusk, reeds, and wood. In this workshop, master flute maker Leland Wach will lead students through turning, tuning, and finishing each flute with an optional ornamentation. Leland is also a talented flautist and will conclude the workshop with a lesson in playing your new creation.

Schedule: Saturday,  9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and Sunday, 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Prerequisite: None. This class is suitable for beginners.

You will learn:

  • to process the blanks
  • to shape the blanks
  • how to locate and drill the sound holes tune the flute
  • make an optional ornament to customize the flute
  • the basics of playing the flute

Tools required: All tools and materials supplied. However, if you have a “special” piece of wood that you would like to use, feel free to bring it. Minimum size is 25″ long and 1 1/2 inches square.

Please bring ear and eye protection and a mask.

Class size: Maximum 8.

PLEASE NOTE: In addition to our standard class policies, we are taking additional precautions due to the COVID-19 virus. Effective May 26, 2020:
We will be strictly limiting class sizes to no more than eight (8) students to allow for adequate distancing between class participants.
We will provide disinfectant wipes and will require all benches and shared tools to be sanitized before and after each class.
All students, instructors, and staff are required to wear a properly-fitted mask that securely covers the nose and mouth while inside the school.
When entering the school, all students, instructors, and staff will have their temperature checked. Anyone with a temperature above 100.3 will not be allowed to enter the building.
Anyone exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms—even if it is believed to be allergy-related—will not be allowed to enter the building.
