Making Kitchen Gagets

There is something almost magic about creating practical items that can be used daily and then passed
down to the next generation.

Turning your own kitchen tools brings lasting satisfaction as these items not only add elegance to your meals, but become even more beautiful with use. And, for the woodworker, kitchen tools can be wonderful opportunities to practice your craft.

In this two-day class, professional turner Dane Groneman will lead you through the making of multiple heirloom-worthy kitchen essentials: a Peppermill, Salt Cellar, and French Rolling Pin.

This hands-on class offers great learning opportunities and a creative experience for both beginner and intermediate woodworkers, as Dane introduces you to a variety of new skills.

In just two days, you’ll enhance your woodworking and your housewares, as you make a collection of kitchenware pieces that you can use (or gift) immediately.

You will learn:

  • Basics of woodturning, including wood selection, lathe operations, and tool usage
  • Basic turning and shaping techniques
  • How to customize your work
  • How to finish turned objects to both protect them and bring out the natural beauty of the wood
  • How to troubleshoot common woodworking challenges and refine your craftsmanship

Meet your Instructor

Dane Groneman started turning during high school, when he discovered an old Powermatic lathe gathering dust in the corner of the wood shop. Intrigued, he learned the basics of turning by watching online tutorials and spent hours practicing each new technique.

Now a professional woodturner based in Phoenix, Arizona, Dane continues to develop his craft. He specializes in green-turned bowls and pop-fit boxes, each of which reflects not only his technical skills, but also the passion that he brings to each project.
