KIT101K23 Turning Kitchenware with Nick Agar

November, 10 - November, 12 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

Wooden kitchenware is classic, functional, and beautiful — and also offers great opportunities for developing your woodworking skills.

Join master turner Nick Agar for this fantastic workshop where you’ll turn raw wood into stunning utensils, and expand your knowledge of wood turning and shaping techniques at the same time.

This hands-on class offers a rewarding experience for both beginner and intermediate woodworkers, as Nick introduces you to a variety of new skills.

You will practice both spindle and faceplate turning, and will build proficiency with essential turning tools including lathe, chisels, gouges, and sanding equipment.

You’ll also learn how to combine turning with other techniques for wood shaping to further expand your design options.

Under Nick’s expert guidance, each student will design and create a customized set of beautiful and useful kitchenware including bowls, plates, cups, spatulas, spurtles, and more!

In just three days, you will enhance your woodworking and your housewares, as you make a collection of pieces that you can use (or gift) immediately.

You will learn:

  • Basics of woodturning, including wood selection, lathe operations, and tool usage
  • Workshop safety, including protective gear, proper tool handling, and dust collection
  • Basic turning techniques, including both spindle and faceplate turning
  • Tool sharpening
  • Material selection, considering factors like durability, grain pattern, and aesthetics
  • How to customize your work with unique designs, patterns, and optional wood-burning techniques
  • How to finish turned objects to both protect them and bring out the natural beauty of the wood
  • How to troubleshoot common woodworking challenges and refine your craftsmanship
