Marquetry Box with Paul Schürch
Sometimes simple will do, but when you want to ramp up the “Wow” factor in your woodworking, there is really nothing like Marquetry. In this incredible five-day class, learn from an absolute master of the craft, as Paul Schürch guides you through designing and making a beautiful box with marquetry lid.
Paul will walk you through the challenges and considerations of combining solid wood with veneer, and coach you through hands-on practice working with both solid wood and veneer, as you design and execute your own original artwork in marquetry or veneer.
The finished box measures 10” x 15” x 4” and can be made from your choice of mahogany, maple, walnut, or cherry. Customized with your own design on the lid, it is perfect for storing jewelry or other small items, or giving as a very special gift.
Under Paul’s expert guidance, you will design your own box; select your veneers and hardwoods; mill and size your materials; construct and assemble your box; cut, prepare, and glue your veneers; combine the panel and frame; add the hinge; and finish the box with shellac and lacquer. All students will also receive a link to Paul’s instructional video on box-making in advance of the class.

Paul Schürch
Paul Schürch was born in the USA, and after completing high school, moved to Switzerland with his family in order to study church organ building, marquetry, and furniture design, then continuing education in wooden boat building in the UK and stone mosaic inlay in Italy. After 12 years studying the crafts in Europe he returned to the USA to open his studio for designing and building fine marquetry furniture, and teaching his craft to others in various schools throughout USA and abroad.
“The art of marquetry is the process of creating a design or image using the natural wood, metal, stone or shell. By framing it upon a uniquely designed display, it becomes finely crafted piece of furniture or art that shows off the true nature of these materials. The contrast of the different wood inlay colors, burning certain inlay edges for depth, and curving the artwork, makes it a dynamic art piece.
