IWW100L21 Introduction to Woodworking with Michael Fortune

December, 13 - December, 17 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM

Woodworking is an incredibly enjoyable, creative, and useful pursuit that will provide you with a lifetime of learning opportunities.

Start your journey with this great course taught by one of the leading masters of modern woodworking.

Internationally recognized furniture designer Michael Fortune has been crafting with wood for more than 45 years.

In addition to his striking design aesthetic and impeccable execution, Michael is also a terrific teacher. While he often leads Master classes focused on advanced-level skills, he also loves bringing his enthusiasm for the craft to new woodworkers. So he has designed this course to be the class he wishes he had all those years ago!

This one-week course provides a solid introduction to woodworking with an emphasis on hand tools and easy-to-use machines that fit well in the home shop. You’ll leave with everything you need to know to get started working with wood as a hobby or even a possible career.

Absolute beginners will find this class welcoming, and woodworkers who already have a little experience will get a terrific foundation to build on.

Over the week, we will progress from illustrated lectures about wood, drawing, and furniture design into hands-on furniture building, as each student constructs a small wood table with four different joints. You will also have the opportunity to customize the table legs based on historical designs or your own unique vision.

 You will learn:

    Basics of wood

Principles of woodworking and furniture design

How to use, sharpen, and maintain hand tools such as chisels, planes, and card

How to safely set up and use power tools including the band saw and planer

How to select and mill lumber

How to cut joints by hand and machine

How to make and use simple jigs

How to select and use adhesives and finishes

How to buy and maintain a basic set of tools

How to set up a small workshop
