IWW100D21 Introduction to Woodworking

This class is designed to give the student a solid introduction to woodworking.

Want to jumpstart your woodworking career?

Our Introduction to Woodworking class is a one-week daytime class that covers the key aspects of woodworking, including the properties of wood, safe use of the most common hand and power tools, and fundamental skills like how to mill lumber, how to cut joinery by hand and machine, construction and assembly techniques, gluing, sanding, and finishing.

While not as in-depth as our twelve-week Fundamentals series, this engaging class will familiarize students with the woodworking shop and the basics of the craft. Hands-on demos will help to gain confidence with tools and techniques, and give you a foundation to build on

  • band saw
  • router how to mill lumber
  • hand and machine cut joinery
  • construction and assembly

  • surface preparation, sanding, application

Prerequisites: None. Beginners welcome.

Tools required: None. Tool kit supplied by the school.

We will be strictly limiting class sizes to no more than nine (9) students to allow for adequate distancing between class participants.
All benches and shared tools will be sanitized before and after each class.
All students, instructors, and staff are required to wear a properly-fitted mask that securely covers the nose and mouth while inside the school.
When entering the school, all students, instructors, and staff will have their temperature checked. Anyone with a temperature above 100.3 will not be allowed to enter the building.
Anyone exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms—even if it is believed to be allergy-related—will not be allowed to enter the building.

Meet your Instructor

Raúl has been a professional furniture maker since 1990. A member and former president of the Arizona Association of Fine Woodworkers, and a member of the Society of American Period Furniture Makers, Raúl specializes in custom furniture and antiques restoration, and is particularly interested in traditional hand-tool techniques. He began to teach himself woodworking during the 1970’s while working in the aerospace industry and eventually changed careers to devote himself to the craft. In 2008, with the help of other accomplished woodworkers, he founded the School in order to bring the highest level of woodcraft education to Arizona and to create opportunities for the next generation of woodworkers to learn from some of today’s most respected masters.
