HOL101J22 Hollow Forms and Vases with Matt Monaco

October, 21 - October, 23 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST

Hollow forms and vases are an exciting category of turning projects, as you can create visually striking forms that are as satisfying to create as they are to behold.

Join master turner Matt Monaco for an exciting course that will dramatically improve your turning skills as you learn to design and create hollow forms and vases on the lathe.

You will learn the key principles and techniques necessary for using gouges and curved hollowing tools to control the size and shape of each piece.

In addition, you will learn important design concepts, such as how to use the grain and figure of the wood to highlight the curve, form, and line of the vessel, and how to incorporate various stylistic influences.

An excellent and encouraging teacher, Matt will share many insights, most effective methods, and nuances of approach based on his own years of experience.

You will learn:

  • Safe and efficient use of the lathe, including optimal ergonomic positioning
  • Tool usage theory and application
  • Why and how to maintain properly shaped & sharpened turning tools
  • The principles and differences of turning both vases & hollow forms with gouges and curved hollowing tools
  • Design methods that highlight the overall form to create the greatest visual appeal
  • Incorporating cultural & stylistic influences into your designs
  • What accounts for making a visually well-designed piece & how to develop your own eye for form
  • Finishing options for your turned creations.
