FTW200H23 Fundamentals of Traditional Woodworking II

August, 14 - September, 7 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM MST


Ready to move beyond the basics? The second step in our three-part Fundamentals series, this course builds on the skills taught in Fundamentals I and prepares you for even more advanced craftsmanship as you progress in your woodworking. In addition to hand tools, this class introduces power tools. This is a hands-on class, during which you will improve your skills through exercises and projects, concluding with a beautiful bench with mortise and tenon joinery and draw bore joints.

You will learn:

Safe use of power tools, including jointer, planer, band saw, miter saw, and table saw
Hand-cut dovetails, through and half-blind
Hand-cut mortise and tenon
Shaping with spokeshaves
Surface preparation for finishing
Working to a drawing
Marking out
Gluing up
Schedule: Evening classes, 6 p.m. – 9 p.m., Monday, Wednesday and Thursday, for a total of 36 instruction hours. There will be additional shop time available as needed to work on the exercises.

NOTE: There will be no class on Labor Day,September 4th.  The make-up class will be held on Tuesday September 5th.

Prerequisite: Fundamentals I or equivalent.

Tools required: All tools and materials supplied by the school.

Please bring ear and eye protection and a safety mask.

Class size: Maximum 8.

Eye, hearing and dust protection are required when you in the machine room or operating machines in the bench room.

Long sleeves, loose-fitting clothing, and long hair are not allowed around the power equipment.

Open-toed shoes or sandals are not allowed.

Meet your Instructor

A native of northern Michigan, John has called Phoenix home since the early 80’s. He attended the Roberto-Venn School of Luthieary and successfully completed the demanding course. John has grown into an excellent craftsman. John’s experience includes; building window shutters, office furniture and custom kitchen cabinets. He is currently employed by De La Madera in Scottsdale Arizona where he builds high end and unique one-of-a-kind furniture the interior designed trade. John has been in instructor for two years. In his spare time, he enjoys building ukuleles.
