FTW200E23 Fundamentals of Traditional Woodworking II

Ready to move beyond the basics? The second step in our three-part Fundamentals series, this course builds on the skills taught in Fundamentals I and prepares you for even more advanced craftsmanship as you progress in your woodworking. This is a hands-on class, during which you will improve your skills through exercises and projects, concluding with a beautiful dovetailed bench with tusked mortise and tenon jointery and pegged stretchers.

You will learn:

  • Safe use of power tools, including jointer, planer, band saw, miter saw, and table saw
  • Hand-cut dovetails, through and half-blind
  • Hand-cut mortise and tenon
  • Sharpening
  • Shaping with spokeshaves
  • Surface preparation for finishing
  • Working to a drawing
  • Marking out
  • Gluing up

Prerequisite: Fundamentals I or equivalent.

Schedule: Classes are held on Monday’s Wednesday’s and Thursday’s, from 6:00pm to 9:00pm with one exception; there will be no class on Monday May 29th in observance of Memorial Day . For this week classes will be held on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, May 30, 31 and June 1.

Tools required: All tools and materials supplied by the school.

Please bring ear and eye protection and a safety mask. No open-toed shoes or sandals are allowed.

Class size: Maximum 9.

Safety

Eye, hearing and dust protection are required in the machine room or when operating machines in the bench room.

Long sleeves and loose-fitting clothing are not allowed around the power equipment. Long hair must be pulled back and secured.

Closed-toe shoes are required. Open-toed shoes or sandals are not allowed.

COVID Policy: Masks are optional, however, if you are exhibiting symptoms of any contagious illness or if you have had a positive test for COVID or influenza within the past 5 days, please notify the school and do not attend class.

Meet your Instructor

A native of northern Michigan, John has called Phoenix home since the early 80’s. He attended the Roberto-Venn School of Luthieary and successfully completed the demanding course. John a professional cabinetmaker and excellent craftsman. John’s experience includes; building window shutters, office furniture and custom kitchen cabinets. He is currently employed by Allaire Inc. in Scottsdale Arizona where he builds high end and unique one-of-a-kind furniture the interior designed trade. John has been an instructor at SSW for four years. In his spare time, he enjoys building ukuleles.
