Finishing2-G25 Intermediate Finishing with Jim Altman
The finish on any woodworking project is not only protective, but can greatly enhance the beauty and appearance of any piece—if it is chosen thoughtfully and applied properly. This hands-on course will focus on more advanced finishing techniques, including spray finishing, varnish, and lacquer, and you will make several samples to build your skills and refine your technique. Instructor Jim Altman is one of the best finishers in the country, so come prepared with all of your finishing questions.
You will learn:
- Color theory, and why you need to know it
- Finishing options and how to pick the right one for your project
- How to understand product labeling
- How to choose the right application for each product
- Use of sanding sealer
- Use of stains
- Use of dyes
- Layering the finish
Prerequisite: Finishing Basics or equivalent.
Schedule: 9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m., two consecutive weekends.
Tools required: All tools and materials supplied by the school.
Please bring ear and eye protection and a safety mask.
Class size: Maximum 8.

Safety
Eye, hearing and dust protection are required in the machine room or when operating
machines in the bench room.
Long sleeves and loose-fitting clothing are not allowed around the power equipment.
Long hair must be pulled back and secured.
Closed-toe shoes are required. Open-toed shoes or sandals are not allowed.
Public health policy: Masks are optional, however, if you are exhibiting symptoms of
any contagious illness or if you have had a positive test for any contagious illness within
the past 5 days, please notify the school and do not attend class.
