Every woodworking project, no matter how small (or big), needs a finish.
Not only does the finish protect the surface, but a good finish can greatly enhance the beauty and appearance of the entire piece. If chosen poorly or applied improperly, however, a bad finish can spoil an otherwise masterful piece of woodworking.
Join master finisher, restoration expert, and conservator, Jim Altman for this exciting hands-on course and learn proven finishing techniques — including spray finishing, varnish, and lacquer — that will empower you to choose and apply the right finish for all of your projects.
You will make several samples to build your skills, refine your technique, and learn how to choose which type of finish is best suited for each project.
This class is also appropriate for anyone interested in restoring or refinishing existing furniture.
Jim is not only an experienced instructor, but one of the best finishers in the country, so come prepared with all of your finishing questions.
You will learn:
- Color theory, and why you need to know it
- Finishing options and how to pick the right one for your project
- How to understand product labeling
- How to choose the right application for each product
- Use of sanding sealer
- Use of stains
- Use of dyes
- Layering the finish
