VNR300D24 Decorative Veneering with Paul Schurch

April 13 @ 9:00 am - April 15 @ 5:00 pm

$578.00

Veneering — the art of applying thin sheets of wood to a substrate — has a long history in fine furniture-making and offers a wide range of design possibilities that can greatly enhance your woodworking projects.

For this exciting three-day class, master furniture-maker and veneering expert, Paul Schürch returns to the Southwest School of Woodworking to share his deep knowledge of this incredible craft.

Through both Paul’s expert demonstrations and hands-on exercises, you will learn fundamentals of how to select, prepare, store, cut, join, and glue veneers and substrates. Paul will introduce you to his techniques for designing with veneers; using veneering tools; different methods for making clean-cut and tight-fitting joints, gluing veneer, and sanding and finishing veneer.

You will then practice creating a variety of classic veneer effects, including book-matches, borderwork, and starburst designs.

This class should inspire and empower you to incorporate decorative
veneering on your own projects using Paul’s clear and simple approach.

In addition to producing his own stunning work from his studio in Hawaii, Paul has been sharing his woodworking experience for many years through in-person classes, as well as videos and publications. All students in this class will also receive copies of Paul’s book and movie on Decorative Veneering to take home for ongoing practice.

You will learn:

  • How to select and purchase quality veneer

  • How to use and sharpen veneering tools

Meet your Instructor

Paul Schürch was born in the USA, and after completing high school, moved to Switzerland with his family in order to study church organ building, marquetry, and furniture design, then continuing education in wooden boat building in the UK and stone mosaic inlay in Italy. After 12 years studying the crafts in Europe he returned to the USA to open his studio for designing and building fine marquetry furniture, and teaching his craft to others in various schools throughout USA and abroad.

“The art of marquetry is the process of creating a design or image using the natural wood, metal, stone or shell. By framing it upon a uniquely designed display, it becomes finely crafted piece of furniture or art that shows off the true nature of these materials. The contrast of the different wood inlay colors, burning certain inlay edges for depth, and curving the artwork, makes it a dynamic art piece.
