Push your skills and create an heirloom in this Master Class with David Fleming.
An elegant and functional Cabinet on a Stand became the hallmark of master woodworker and author James Krenov (1920-2009), who developed and taught techniques that transformed modern woodworking.
The cabinet we will build in this class honors the Krenov style, using the same methods and details for which his work is famous, and was designed by the class instructor and master craftsman David Fleming, who studied with Krenov in the 1980s.
Made entirely of solid wood, the cabinet carcass is doweled and the stand is built using both through and blind mortise and tenon joinery. The doors are hung on brass knife hinges with hand-carved closures and pulls. Inside the cabinet, a small drawer invites the user to open it. The finish is hand-applied using shellac on the inside and an oil/varnish mixture over shellac on the outside.
The example shown is constructed of domestic ash and African mahogany, some construction details may differ from the prototype.
All wood will be selected and milled in advance by the instructor.
You will:

· Shape cabinet edges and other parts by hand

David Fleming learned basic carpentry as a matter of necessity while living in remote northwest Alaska for many years. In the 1980’s, he discovered the work of woodworking icon James Krenov, and spent two years studying with Krenov at the renowned Fine Woodworking program at California’s College of the Redwoods. David relocated to Scottsdale, AZ in 1993 and has made furniture there ever since. An expert in hand tool use, he has taught Krenov-inspired woodworking techniques to small classes and groups since 2009. Visit www.dfcabinetmaker.com
