Danish Cord Stool with David Fleming
While we here at Southwest School of Woodworking always appreciate solid wood furniture, we also enjoy the comfort and aesthetic contrast created when you combine wood with other materials, such as finishing a chair or stool with a woven seat.
For nearly 100 years, Danish Cord has been used to create comfortable and beautiful seats by weaving it in a variety of patterns.
Danish Cord is created by twisting together three strands of paper, and is commonly associated with Danish Modern or Mid-Century Modern style furniture.
In this fun two-day class, David Fleming will teach the “Double Side Rail” style of weaving cord around a frame without using any nails or staples. Each student will be provided with a pre-made footstool-sized double rail hardwood frame (12”h x 14.5”l x 12.5”w) and a 2-pound coil of Danish Cord.
We will start Day One with discussion and demonstration and will introduce the materials, tools and techniques involved in this process. Then we will weave the warp pattern and wrap the back rail. Day Two will be devoted to weaving the weft pattern. By the end of the class, each student should have a finished stool to take home, as well as a solid understanding and appreciation of the craft of weaving with Danish Cord.
