Danish Cord Bench with David Fleming
While we love crafting solid wood furniture, we also appreciate the comfort and style result from harmoniously combining wood with other materials. One beautiful example of this synergy is the art of finishing chairs and benches with meticulously woven seats, such as we will explore in this workshop.
For close to a century, Danish Cord has been the medium of choice for crafting comfortable and visually striking seats through the intricate weaving of various patterns. This unique material is crafted by twisting together three strands of paper, and it’s often associated with the iconic styles of Danish Modern and Mid-Century Modern furniture.
In this engaging three-day class, master craftsman, David Fleming, will teach the knowledge and techniques required to master the “Double Side Rail” style of Danish cord weaving around a frame without the use of any nails or staples. Each participant will receive all the necessary materials to create a bench-sized double rail hardwood frame, 19″ long x 16″ wide x 19″ high, and a generous 2-pound coil of Danish Cord.
On the first day, we will kick off with a comprehensive discussion and demonstration, acquainting you with the materials, tools, and techniques involved. Then you will assemble your own bench frame, laying the foundation for your project.
On day two, we will weave the warp pattern and learn to wrap the back rail with precision, creating the structural integrity and visual appeal that Danish Cord is renowned for.
The third and final day will be dedicated to perfecting the weft pattern, resulting in a gracefully woven seat. By the conclusion of this class, each participant will take home a finished bench that not only reflects their newfound skills but also embodies a deep appreciation for the artistry of Danish Cord weaving.
Join us in this immersive workshop and embark on a journey
into the world of Danish Cord craftsmanship, where tradition meets innovation to produce functional artistry.
