Chess Board Workshop
Whether you’re looking for a fun gift, a woodworking challenge, or an upgrade to your game night, you’ll have a great time building this heirloom quality game board, perfect for chess or checkers.
This two-day Weekend Workshop guides you through cutting and assembling veneered panels to create a perfect checkerboard pattern using the strip method. You’ll practice using a vacuum press for lamination, and will make a mitered walnut frame with detailed molding and an elegant cutaway foot. The finished board measures 18 1/2 x 18 1/2 and is beautiful, functional, and to play with the included chess pieces.

– Game board made of pre-veneered panels assembled into checkerboard pattern with mitered border, plus
walnut frame with molding detail and cutaway foot
– Finished size: 18 ½” x 18 ½” x 1 ½” with 1 ¾” squares
If time permits, students may choose to apply a hand rubbed oil finish to the board
– NOTE: Chess pieces are included
You will learn:
– How to use the strip method to create an accurate checkerboard pattern
– Laminating with the vacuum press
– How to create a mitered frame with molding and dado
Prerequisite: None. Beginners welcome.
Tools required: None. All tools and materials supplied by the school.
Safety: Please bring ear and eye protection and a properly-fitting face mask that covers your nose and mouth (valved masks are not allowed).

We will be strictly limiting class sizes to no more than nine (9) students to allow for adequate distancing between class participants.
All benches and shared tools will be sanitized before and after each class.
All students, instructors, and staff are required to wear a properly-fitted mask that securely covers the nose and mouth while inside the school.
When entering the school, all students, instructors, and staff will have their temperature checked. Anyone with a temperature above 100.3 will not be allowed to enter the building.
Anyone exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms—even if it is believed to be allergy-related—will not be allowed to enter the building.
