BWL101I21 Bowl Turning and Design with Matt

Learn to design, turn, and finish beautiful turned-wood vessels with Matt Monaco — a modern master of turning. Even if you have never touched a lathe, Matt will lead you through the process.
In this three-day workshop, you’ll learn by doing as you discover the joy of shaping wood on the lathe and the finer points in the art of creating forms and vessels exactly as you envision them. You’ll make multiple bowls from start to finish and will be able to gain skills and confidence from Matt’s thoughtful guidance.
You will learn:
- Proper use and application of the lathe and tools
- The importance of tool sharpening
- Body positioning and the ergonomics of turning
- How to hollow and shape semi-enclosed vessels
- How to design and execute finishing details on turned vessels
- What makes a well-designed piece, considering both visual and tactile effects
- How to develop your own eye for form
Open to all skill levels. All tools and materials included. However, if you have tools of your own feel free to bring them

PLEASE NOTE: In addition to our standard class policies, we are taking additional precautions due to the COVID-19 virus. Effective May 26, 2020:
We will be strictly limiting class sizes to no more than eight (8) students to allow for adequate distancing between class participants.
All benches and shared tools will be sanitized before and after each class.
All students, instructors, and staff are required to wear a properly-fitted mask that securely covers the nose and mouth while inside the school.
When entering the school, all students, instructors, and staff will have their temperature checked. Anyone with a temperature above 100.3 will not be allowed to enter the building.
Anyone exhibiting any cold or flu-like symptoms—regardless of cause—will not be allowed to enter the building.

Meet your Instructor
Professional woodturner Matt Monaco produces beautifully crafted bowls, plates, and platters from his studio in the Ozark region of Missouri. Combining thoughtful design and precise technique, Matt uses a standard lathe and turning tools to produce wood pieces that echo the precision and elegance of traditional pottery, creating a unique style that he rightfully describes as “wood-carved pottery.”
As the founder and owner of Monaco Bowls, Matt designs and creates turned products for homeowners, gallery buyers, museum stores, and interior designers. With 16 years of turning experience, Matt has worked with such masters of the craft as Richard Raffan and, in addition to producing his own work, is a sponsored representative for Glaser Hi-Tec Tools, demonstrates for national wood turning clubs of the AAW, and teaches at woodworking schools across the country.
