Exciting announcement!

Artistin-Residence Program with Michael Fortune

Prerequisite: Fundamentals III or equivalent experience.

The Southwest School of Woodworking Artist-in-Residence program invites participants to step away from the constraints of daily life and delve deeply into their craft. We create a space for woodworkers to push themselves as they work alongside experienced masters in an encouraging, supportive, and highly motivating environment. Aimed at woodworkers and furniture makers ready to expand their ideas and methods, this program will give the students time to produce work otherwise elusive to them and explore new and different methods, equipment, and materials.

We are delighted to announce that internationally-renown furniture designer Michael Fortune will conduct our first Artist in Residence program, starting in January 2022. Michael will spend four weeks creating one or more new projects at the school and will also mentor up to eight woodworkers who will join him in working on their own designs. Michael is excited to both tutor other participants and to make the most of his own chance to work freely on projects that are not client commissions.

This is a rare opportunity to work alongside one of North America’s most respected and creative contemporary masters of the craft. Michael is justly acknowledged as a world-class artist not only for his stunning designs but also for his incredible teaching skills and technical expertise.

In addition, Michael will be joined by Kelly Parker, recipient of the first Krenov Professional Development Award and a former intern in Michael Fortune’s workshop. Kelly will work on her own project and provide another experienced perspective for student participants.

Student participants must be self-directed with sufficient skills and experience to work independently on their chosen project, which should be completed within the four-week period. Michael and Kelly will be available for mentoring, guidance, consultation, and tutorship at specific times Mondays through Fridays.

All residency participants will be given full access to the machine room, bench room, and lathe room from 9 a.m.–9 p.m. Mondays through Fridays, with additional shop time available by appointment on Saturdays. While all tools are provided, students may bring their own if desired and participants can purchase their materials from the school, for their own project. Please provide a material list to the school at least two weeks before the start of class.

Students must submit their drawings and sketches for approval. This four-week program is open to emerging and established furniture makers and woodworkers who want to cultivate new directions in their craftsmanship or design or to undertake a project that would otherwise seem too daunting. To support experimentation and a spirit of learning, this program includes additional guest faculty, as well as access to school staff, who can provide technical support and assistance.

Seats are strictly limited to a maximum of eight and applicants will be asked to submit a project proposal for a design that they intend to execute during the residency. We recommend applying early to allow time for follow-up conversations to develop your ideas. Please contact us for further details regarding potential submissions.
